Yep, it was in the middle of a week after a small storm combined with a tide that was running pretty high. This was as the tide was going out.

I figured it got ripped up in the storm and dropped, probably wouldn't last much longer like that. When at the beach, I usually only see one "trunk" at a time.

Ah, that makes sense. I've never even seen trunks of it! I live in the western US, and the sort of seaweed I've seen shows up on the California shores, usually brown kelp or that mossy looking stuff.

Yeah, you see that stuff up where I took this (Oregon coast, about midway up the state). Have seen some odd things after storms there. Saw a beach once covered with sand dollars quarter size or smaller, still covered in the hair/fuzz they have. Big storm killed them and littered the beach with them. Wish I could get there more, but usually only get to the coast for a week every few years.
